James H. Kroeger, M.M. (“2018 Synod of Bishops on the Youth: An Overview”) studies the preparatory document (Instrumentum laboris) of the 2018 Synod of Bishops on the Youth—its background, structure, and various themes presented in each section. His essay serves as a primer especially for the youth who are urged to contribute their ideas and sentiments to the Synod. In a letter he addressed to young people on the occasion of the presentation of the preparatory document, Pope Francis invites them to “go, to set out towards a future which is unknown but one which will surely lead to fulfillment, a future towards which He Himself accompanies you.…” The Pope also assures them that “the Church also wishes to listen to your voice, your sensitivities and your faith; even your doubts and your criticism. Make your voice heard, let it resonate in communities and let it be heard by your shepherds of souls.” The preparatory document which the Pope is entrusting to young people will thus be their “compass” on this synodal journey. – from the Editor’s Preface
