The 40th anniversary, celebrated recently, of the establishment of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC) gives us an opportunity to reflect on its impact on the life of the Church in Asia. Cardinal Quevedo’s article illustrates how the pastoral guidelines of the FABC have been implemented on the level of both the federation and the local churches. He considers FABC’s call for dialogue as “the basic mode of the mission of evangelization” in Asia. According to him, “the FABC provided the venue for Asian bishops, shepherds of their local churches, to engage in a process of dialogue between local churches.” On the national level, he points out the example of the Second Plenary Council of the Philippines (PCP II) where various representatives of the local churches—lay, religious, and clerics—shared their pastoral experiences, reflections, and insights with one another. As a result, the implementation of the PCP II directives in the local churches, though uneven, spurred the growth of basic ecclesial communities (BECs) in the country, especially in Mindanao. – from the Editor’s Preface
