Lancy Monteiro, S.J. (“Jesus Christ: Partial or Fullness of Truth?”) upholds the Catholic belief that Jesus is the fullness of God’s revelation even though various religions may have some knowledge of the inexhaustible Divine Mystery. How can Jesus who is finite embody the Eternal Truth of God? To explain this paradox, Monteiro makes a distinction between Truth and truths. Truth is “the very manifestation of God’s being/self in the person of Jesus of Nazareth—God enfleshed, Emmanuel, God to humans as humans” (p. 31–32). This is clearly how the New Testament proclaims Jesus—he is the incarnate Word of God, Son of God, etc. Whereas truths refer to “everything that leads to humankind’s knowledge about God” (p. 32). These seminal truths (logoi spermatikoi) about God are not purely human inventions but are offered by the Holy Spirit to humankind throughout salvation history. – F. Ramirez (ed.)
