Mary’s role vis-à-vis the tenuous relationship between Roman Catholics and other Christians may be likened to the proverbial image of a double-edged sword—the figure of the Mother of Jesus can serve as a common reference or rallying point among believers of various denominations, on the one hand, yet also act as an added obstacle to understanding and harmony between them, on the other.
