Liturgy. Timoteo Ofrasio, S.J., in “On the Reformed Mass of Vatican II and Benedict XVI’s Letter motu proprio Summorum Pontificum,” succinctly traces the recent history of the Catholic Mass, moving from the “Reformed Mass of Vatican II” as mandated by Sacrosanctum Concilium to the Mass of Paul VI to Benedict XVI’s Summorum Pontificum. He strongly recommends that a program of catechesis be designed to help Catholics understand the liturgy and the values that inform the celebration of the mass. He does this with an obvious appreciation for the Tridentine liturgy, but he is also cognizant of the many “good reasons” that ensure a secure future for the reformed mass of the last Council. Perhaps what is required is an informed study and sustained conversation on the place of liturgy itself in Christian life. – from the Editor’s Preface
