Franz Jan S. Santos (“Remembering Damaso: Ateneo de Manila High School’s Portrayal of the Late 19th-Century Philippine Church [1980–1999]”) discusses how social studies (Araling Panlipunan) and Filipino courses taught in secondary and tertiary schools in the country have unfairly portrayed the Catholic Church. This was due in part to the use of Jose Rizal’s novels and post-colonial literature in instructional materials. Even the textbooks that were written for such courses highlighted nationalist ideas that maligned people and institutions perceived to be allied with the Spanish colonial regime. In 1999, some former teachers of the Ateneo de Manila High School wrote their own textbooks which provided nuanced treatment of the causes of the unrests in the 19th century and a different perspective on the Filipino clergy’s fight for the secularization of the parishes. Santos concludes his essay by discussing the reasons behind the accusations against the Church and offering a nuanced and balanced view of such based on more recent research and literature. – F.
