Doctrine and Religious Education. The second article, “Renewed Focus on Doctrine in Religious Education/Practical Theology,” is by Joseph Roche, Professor Emeritus of the Loyola School of Theology and the Ateneo de Manila University. Religious Education and Catechesis have been the life-long passion of Fr. Roche. In this article, he explores the nature of doctrine and the role it plays in faith education. Given the misunderstandings that many people have of “doctrine” and its being sidelined in programs of religious education and catechesis, Fr. Roche’s essay contributes to the clarification of doctrine as an essential dimension of religious education itself. The four practical principles he proposes at the end of his essay should serve as guideposts for religious educators keen on bringing to life and expression the nature and role of doctrine in their work and mission. – from the Editor’s Preface
