Mindful of the Second Vatican Council, Pope John Paul II revisited the definition and function of the Church, presenting it as striving to bring all peoples to full reconciliation with God, with themselves, with their neighbor, and with the whole of creation. The Church, in sum, “is also by her nature always reconciling.” The General Congregation (GC) of the Society of Jesus, for example, has been focusing on reconciliation and peace, particularly in terms of the sentire cum Ecclesia of the Spiritual Exercises—the 34th GC identified the Society’s mission as a ministry of reconciliation in the service of Christ while the recent 36th GC recognized Jesuits as being companions on a mission of reconciliation and justice. The mission of reconciliation and justice, in particular, plays an important role in the Society’s universal apostolic preferences from 2019 to 2029. – Author (first paragraph)
