The Intercultural Mission of the Society of St. Paul in the Digital World

Founded to proclaim the gospel through mass communication, it is the mission of the Society of St. Paul to be active in the digital world. With social media and its dialogic communication process, this congregation must be attuned to the missio Dei as embodied in Ad Gentes and deepened by the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC).

This dissertation analyzes how intercultural mission can enable this congregation to be more relevant and active in its mission in the digital world. Mission has evolved from ad gentes to inter gentes, embodied by welcome and dialogue with the “strangers” — the poor, culture, and world religions. Missio inter gentes (mission among the peoples) entails intercultural mission that inspires contact with members of world religions and the poor.

Social media, YouTube in particular, has become the space to know world religions, their history, holy men and women, and prayers. By promoting their stories, the congregation encourages intercultural dialogue, helping Christians to strengthen their faith, especially through contact with holy men and women of other religions. Social media, too, has enabled the stories of the poor to be known far and wide. The congregation is called to be in close contact with the poor to tell the story of their sad and joyful stories and upload them on social media. This intercultural dialogue with the poor strengthens the Society of St. Paul’s spirituality, making its mission more relevant in the digital world.
