Francis D. Alvarez, S.J. (“A Test Case for Recent Reflections on Inspiration: How Can Psalm 137 Be Inspired?”) deals with the question of how imprecatory passages in the Bible such as those found in Ps. 137 can be inspired by God. In what sense can they be salvific? Using the insights of Ormond Rush and the Pontifical Biblical Commission’s latest document on inspiration, Alvarez explains that the Holy Spirit is active—through the interplay of the sensus fidei of individuals and the sensus fidelium of communities—in all of the three dimensions of Sacred Scripture: 1) the historical process which produced the sacred texts, 2) the ecclesial process which produced the canon of Scripture, and 3) its reception in history. – from the Editor’s Preface
