James McTavish, F.M.V.D. (“The Lion Roars: Opposing Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide in the Spirit of Cardinal von Galen”) recalls the heroic stance of Cardinal Clemens August von Galen, Bishop of Münster, against the Nazi regime’s extermination of people they considered genetically compromised, unproductive, or terminally ill. Von Galen’s courageous speeches and writings denouncing the Nazi program of eugenics should inspire Christians today to confront the evil of euthanasia and assisted suicide. Indeed, some countries have already legalized these abominable practices, and some groups even promote them under the guise of compassion and freedom of choice. McTavish concludes his essay by inviting all to value their God-given life and be “ministers of life” like the Good Samaritan. – F. Ramirez SJ (ed.)
